4NRg have been working on a project for the Broads Authority on combining a tidal energy device with a tidal barrier: the result is the Tidal Harvester 5 (TH5). This concept would allow the barrier to generate electricity for the vast majority of the year (350-360 days) and only be used as a barrier in extreme tides when there was the greatest risk of flooding.

This work will hopefully be extended during 2011 as there has been additional interest from DEFRA, the Environment Agency and the Greater London Authority who might be able to use a modification in the Thames Barrier.

The latest work has been around extending the work on the TH5 to include other work undertaken by 4NRg combining coastal protection with energy generation. This then creates the opportunity to devise an integrated defence strategy for coast and estuaries that is paid for, at least in part, by the commercial generation of electricity.

During 2011 4NRg is planning to use its new flow tank to model the likely impacts of these devices on shorelines and in estuaries, and to aid increasing the efficiency of the devices.
